Changes to New Zealand’s Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) Eligibility

Publish Date: 23/11/2024

New Zealand has updated its PSWV rules to offer more flexibility for students. Those who complete a 30-week Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and progress directly to a Master’s degree, even without 30 weeks in the Master’s program, can now apply for a PSWV based on their PGDip.

Students who complete a qualification eligible for PSWV and then pursue a higher-level qualification that doesn’t meet PSWV criteria will have 12 months after their student visa ends to apply for the PSWV.

To qualify for a 3-year PSWV, students must complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study in the Master’s degree itself.

Updated Eligible Qualifications:

  • Teaching qualifications no longer require a Bachelor’s in Science, Mathematics, Technology, or Pacific Languages for secondary school teachers.
  • Graduate diplomas meeting Teaching Council requirements now qualify for PSWV to teach at Primary or Intermediate schools.
  • The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6) with Mechanical Engineering has been added for Mechanical Engineering Technicians.
