The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognised English language proficiency test designed for international students and migrants who wish to study, live, or work in an English-speaking country.
It is jointly owned and administered by three organisations: the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
The IELTS has two test formats:
- IELTS Academic for university admissions and higher education abroad
- IELTS General Training for migration and work in English-speaking countries
IELTS Test Format
The first three sections are completed back-to-back on the same day without breaks. The Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day or up to seven days before or after.

From late June 2026, the paper-based IELTS format is being phased out. Computer-delivered tests are available almost daily across major Indian cities.
About PTE
What is PTE?
The Pearson Test of English (PTE), a fully computer-based English language proficiency test, assesses through AI-based scoring, with results typically available within 48 hours. It evaluates four skills:
For Australian visa and PR purposes, PTE Academic is the accepted format.
PTE Academic
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Candidates aged 16–17 must submit a signed parental consent form before booking
- No educational or professional prerequisites

PTE has multiple test centres across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and many other cities.
IELTS / PTE for Australia PR
To obtain Australian PR, there are three main visa streams: family, work, and business/investor. Skilled migration eligibility is determined through a points-based system factoring in age, English proficiency, work experience, and education.
The Department of Home Affairs revised the accepted English language tests and score requirements for Australian visa applications. All information below reflects the updated requirements.
At-home and fully online test formats are not accepted — this includes TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Online, and OET@Home, and CELPIP Online.
Accepted English Proficiency Tests (from 7 August 2025)
- IELTS Academic or General Training (including OSR)
- PTE Academic
- Cambridge C1 Advanced Test
- Occupational English Test (OET) — for health professionals
- TOEFL iBT (must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' at registration)
- CELPIP General (newly added)
- LANGUAGE CERT Academic (newly added)
- Michigan English Test / MET including Single Section Retake (newly added)

English proficiency is classified into three levels for skilled migration:

Visa-Specific Requirements
- • Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent: Skills assessment, minimum 65 points, Competent English required
- • Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated: Relevant occupation, skills assessment, state/territory nomination, minimum 65 points
- • Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (Provisional): Relevant occupation, skills assessment, regional or eligible family sponsorship, Competent English required
- • Subclass 188 — Business/Investor: Investment or business requirements apply in addition to English proficiency
