BREAKING NEWS: Quebec Introduces Cap on Family Sponsorship Applications

Publish Date: 27/06/2024

As of June 26, 2024, Quebec’s Ministry of Immigration, Francisation, and Integration has imposed a cap on family sponsorship applications.

Under the new cap, a total of 13,000 family sponsorship applications will be accepted:

  • 10,400 for spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children aged 18 and older.
  • 2,600 for parents, grandparents, or other eligible relatives.

Once these limits are reached, no further applications will be accepted by the Ministry.

Exemptions to this cap include:

  • Dependent minor children of the sponsor.
  • Minor children, the sponsor intends to adopt.
  • Orphaned minor children related to the sponsor, such as a brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandson, or granddaughter.
  • Adult children of the sponsor who are dependent due to disability.

For these exemptions, the candidates being sponsored must not be married or in a common-law relationship.

Additionally, the cap does not apply to applications that add a dependent to an already submitted application or a person awaiting permanent resident status after an approved application. Any non-exempt applications received after this point will be returned without processing or charging fees.
